Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor Nursing Unit, and according to hospital policies and procedures, the Registered Nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care for assigned patients.

Job Function


Performs complete and accurate nursing on assessment assigned patients.

  • Completes admission assessment accurately within 60 minutes of patient admission.

  • Performs and documents patient admission assessment completely as outlined per L&D admission/assessment Policy and Procedure.

  • Identifies changes in patient condition and intervenes promptly and appropriately according to L&D P&P, protocols, and order sets. Reports changes  (i.e., test results, abnormal findings, etc.) to the physician and /or SNU appropriately.

  • Assesses and documents patients educational needs on admission and throughout  hospitalization.

Plans comprehensive nursing care for assigned patients according to written hospital standards and physician orders.

  • Nursing process is reflected in plan of care with assessments.

  • Identifies and prioritizes relevant nursing diagnoses and need for interventions.

  • Reviews and updates plan of care as evidenced by appropriate interventions and nursing care documentation according to Standards of Care and Policy & Procedures.

  • Initiates discharge planning upon admission.

Provides and documents skilled care to assigned patients in compliance with written hospital Policies 

     and Procedures and based upon Standards of Care

  • Performs and documents nursing care according to patient needs in a competent and timely manner.

  • Accurately administers and documents medications according to Policy and Procedure.

  • Provides individualized nursing interventions based on identified nursing diagnoses and plan of care.

  • Initiates appropriate teaching and / or referrals.

  • Carries out appropriate interventions based on identified changes in patient condition.

  • Initiates Chain of Command, as necessary, to appropriately care for patients.

  • Assists the surgical team through case preparation and surgical assistance. 

Evaluates patient care outcomes

  • Evaluates plan of care to determine need for interventions according to established P&Ps, order sets, and protocols.

  • Documents resolution of identified patient problems and communicates unresolved problems to physician and SNU (if indicated).

  • Evaluates effectiveness of patient teaching and revises teaching plan as indicated.

  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities.
