Position Summary: These positions are located at the West Roxbury Campus in Medical-Surgial units. These are intermittent positions, often referred to as "per-diem."
The Registered Nurse works under the direction of the Associate Chief Nurse (ACNS) for inpatient nursing and/or their designee. He/she is accountable for the delivery of care to patients in the inpatient medical/surgical setting. The incumbent utilizes the nursing process in managing, developing, implementing and evaluating the patient's individual plan of care with the interdisciplinary care team. The Registered Nurse administers medications using BCMA and documents treatments and patient care utilizing CPRS/GUI. He/she will maintain a safe, dignified environment.
Description: Per-Diem (intermittent) Registered Nurse positions supplement the staffing of various units/floors. The term of the temporary appointment is not to exceed 364 days from the date of boarding; however, it is subject to extension. The intermittent RN will designate scheduling preference based on availability. Intermittent RN's are scheduled for at least four (4) tours per month, which includes two (2) weekend tours per month. Intermittent RN's will also work two (2) holiday's per year (one winter holiday-Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Years AND one summer holiday-Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day). Additional time may be schedule on an as-needed basis. Furthermore, hours worked may not exceed 8 hours in a 24 hour period or 40 hour work week, unless approved by the ACNS.
As this is a temporary appointment, employment may be terminated at any time at the will of the organization. Attendance will be considered a part of the performance standard. Poor attendance (no shifts scheduled or worked within a month period, three (3) cancellations of scheduled work by the employee, or (3) declinations of requests to work during times designated as available) may be considered grounds for termination.

- Intermittent RN's are required to complete New Employee Orientation (3 full days), Clinical Nursing Orientation (3 full days), and additional clinical orientation within 45 calendar days of the start date.Failure to do so may result in termination of the temporary appointment.
- Intermittent RN's submit monthly availability to the service by the 1st of the month prior to the month being scheduled
- Intermittent RN's do not serve in the role of charge nurse.
- Intermittent RN's do not accrue Annual Leave and Sick Leave.
- Must complete background investigation.
- Intermittent RN's are not eligible for health benefits.
- Selectees will be required to sign RN Intermittent Float Pool Agreement.
NOTE: Selectee may be required to work at any Boston Healthcare System campus, as needed.

NOTE: Appointment in this position is subject to review by the Nurse Professional Standards Board. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
- At least 1 year Med/Surg Nursing experience

- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
