POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for the assessment and management of breastfeeding mothers and babies particularly those with problems or concerns.

Exercises independent judgment in the assessment, diagnosis and initiation of nursing processes and procedures in the management of the lactation patient and her infant.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduate of Accredited School of Nursing

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • 3 years nursing experience that provides opportunities to obtain knowledge and skills relating to lactation and adult learning principle

  • Willingness to expend time and effort to keep abreast of breastfeeding trends and current evidence-based practice guidelines via reading of research, attendance at workshops or seminars.

  • Basic knowledge of Adult Learning Principles needed to plan, implement and present/facilitate education for clients and/or hospital staff.

  • Good speaking, presentation and communication skills.

  • Must be competent in the assessment, treatment, or care of all ages including neonates

LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS

  • IBCLC – International Board Certified Lactation Consultant

  • Basic Life Support

  • Current Colorado RN License

POSITION DUTIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

ASSESSMENT & PATIENT CARE - 40%

  • Assesses the lactating patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of records and clinical data. Evaluates patient’s response and intervenes in a timely manner to ensure optimal patient outcome.

  • Manages lactation issues and utilizes appropriate resources to solve problems for inpatients (OB, NICU, and PEDS populations) and for outpatients as needed.

  • Assists adoptive mothers wanting to breastfeed

  • Coordinates the support for breast-feeding of separated mother/infants

  • Counsels the lactating patient and makes follow-up phone calls at two to five days after discharge of all clients to assess progress and needs at home and to follow-up as needed thereafter

  • Implements patient plan of care and observes outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and physician directions

  • Responsible for documentation of assessments, outcomes, and plan of care

COLLABORATION & EDUCATION - 30%

  • Supports and educates colleagues so that the overall standard of breastfeeding care is improved.

  • Facilitates the Breastfeeding Support Group.

  • Answering phone calls related to breastfeeding issues and concerns.

  • Assisting clients with the purchase or rental of lactation equipment that will enhance breastfeeding success.

  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team to develop and implement holistic, individualized patient plan of care and observes outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and physician directions.

DOCUMENTATION & POLICIES - 30%

  • Develops and updates policies, procedures, standards of care and guidelines for supporting and implementing the art of breastfeeding.

  • Thorough and confidential maintenance of patient charts and records.

  • Thorough documentation of ongoing status, interventions, patient response and outcomes in accurate, timely manner.

  • Serves as patient advocate.

  • Anticipates needs of provider, staff, patient and family.

  • Thorough and confidential maintenance of patient charts and records.

  • Coordinates breast pump rentals. Includes collection of fees and taxes, completes deposits, reports monthly taxes and drafts collection service letters.
