The employee serves as Nursing Assistant (NA) in Patient Care Services at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, Tomah, WI. Areas of assignment include Inpatient Community Living Centers include 400S, 401A, 401B, 402A, 402B, 403AN, 403B and 406A: the inpatient Acute Care units include 400A and 403A, Outpatient 404, Urgent Care, and the float pool. The NA works under the supervision of a registered nurse or other licensed health care professional.
Duties Include:
-Performs a variety of personal care or nursing care activities which do not require practical or vocational nursing licensure or professional nurse educational.
-Performs work assisting other Medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient/resident illnesses or medical conditions.
-Assists providers and nurses in the care and treatment of patients/residents receiving medical, psychiatric, or outpatient treatment. Provides therapeutic interactions with patients/residents at all times.
-Performs simple treatment procedures such as apply or removing binders, arm slings, dressing, and bandages or applying warm and cool packs.
-Observes patients/residents for change in condition (deviation in color, pulse, respiration, pulse oximetry, temperature, blood pressure, pain).
-Uses fall prevention strategies while assisting patients/residents to stand, walk or transfer.
-Performs a wider variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the patient/resident.
-Assisting patients/residents with feeding based on prescribed diet and is aware of patients/residents that are high risk of choking or aspiration.
-Addresses patients/resident's non-routine care and comfort needs for psychosocial and spiritual well-being, prevention of skin breakdown, rehabilitation, pain management, infection control, and safety to include falls precaution information.
-Other additional duties assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday AM shift, Rotating Weekends & Holidays

Experience: At least one full year of progressively responsible assignments and experience as a Nursing Assistant at the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment.
Education: Successful completion of a 4 -year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree. Transcripts Required if qualifying based on education.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
(1) Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
(2) Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new Nursing Assistants by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
(3) Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Physical Requirements: Physical requirements include extensive periods of standing and walking. Duties involve strenuous physical exertion on a regular basis. Patient care activities require regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing and similar activities using appropriate body mechanics and other assistive devices for patient and/or equipment movement and transfer. The employee protects self and others from injury. Considerable agility and dexterity is required to provide care in a proper and safe manner.
