This is a temporary position to assist our Emergency Department with patient transportation during a departmental remodel. As a VA Nursing Assistant you will receive basic training in performing certain patient care duties. You will be assigned on a regular basis to a patient ward and works a rotating tour of duty following formal classroom instruction and demonstration of competency in the nursing assistant duties along with a few specific healthcare tech duties. Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, and carefully planned and controlled conditions in the clinical area, you will perform the following relatively simple and repetitive tasks, which require elementary knowledge of patient or nursing care procedures, but is also trained to recognize emergent situations and take necessary action.

Work Schedule: Sunday - Saturday; Various Shifts; Day/Evening Rotations

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation.
  • English Language Proficiency. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience: Previous experience working in an Emergency Department as a Nursing Assistant is preferred. Completion of a Certified Nursing Assistant course is also preferred, however not required.

Grade Determinations:
GS-3 (Entry Level):
A. Experience and Education: None beyond the basic requirements provided above.
A. Experience: One year of specialized experience as a Nursing Assistant or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermedite treatments. -or-
B. Education. Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accreditied institution with courses related to nursing care. health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians;
GS-5 (Full Performance Level):
A. Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to specific assignment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph (c) below; -or-
B. Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care possession of a bachelor's degree.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-5.Physical Requirements: Good physical and mental ability is required. Position involves considerable strenuous physical exertion on a regular recurring basis. The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. The work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting, and repositioning patients or similar activities. Ability to work around moving objects and equipment. Normal hearing and visual acuity. Must be able to push, pull, stoop, and walk in addition to having manual dexterity. Must be able to wear a mask and protective clothing while working.
