Position Summary

Assists department director/manager by coordinating clinical and department activities for the unit, department and/or service line. Ensures that care is delivered to each patient in accordance with quality standards. Acts as liaison between physicians and patient care team. Maintains communication and promotes cooperation with unit staff and other departments. Provides supervision to the staff; authorizing work procedures and assigning duties. Collaborates with the director/manager on coaching, mentoring and performance management. Promotes the optimal health, well-being and safety of the patient through use of the nursing process and in accordance with patient care standards, guidelines and the State Nurse Practice Act. Demonstrates personal accountability for relationship-based care, organizational mission, and core values.

Minimum Education Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing Bachelor’s (BSN) degree required or Associate’s Degree with recognized National Nursing Certification

Minimum Experience Requirements

  • Two years of recent nursing experience

  • Previous leadership experience, preferred

  • Requires knowledge in nursing, evidence-based practice methods, and person-centered care concepts

  • Nursing skills and knowledge base specific to specialty unit, preferred


  • Current RN license in applicable state of work or current RN license from a participating state in National Licensure Compact for eligible states

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association Additional certifications may be required (refer to facility addendum(s))

Position Duties (essential functions denoted with an * )

  • Assess patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of medical records & clinical data. Evaluates patient’s response and intervenes to ensure optimal patient outcome. *

  • Develop and implement patient plan of care and observe outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team. *

  • Demonstrate care coordination competencies. *

  • Demonstrate competency in a variety of therapeutic/diagnostic interventions including but not limited to IV’s, incision/wound care, medication administration, catheterization and specimen collections. *

  • Promote, advocate and collaborate to protect the health, safety and rights of each patient. *

  • Provide patient/family education through assessment of patient/family learning readiness, needs, and ability. Provide teaching and evaluate effectiveness of teaching. *

  • Recognize the patient or designee as a full partner in providing compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for the patient’s preferences, values, and needs. *

  • Provides person-centered care in which the nurse strives to understand what is most important to the individual and actively engage them in all aspects of care. This care will be delivered with respect for cultural differences and the diversity of human experience.

  • Delegates to non-RN personnel in accordance with State Board of Nursing and hospital policy. *

  • Professional role model for all staff demonstrating ethical/legal/professional nursing process. *

  • Uses standards of care, hospital policies/procedures and regulatory guidelines to guide practice. *

  • Function effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making to achieve quality patient care. *

  • Accountable for teamwork by providing guidance to new team members. *

  • Seeks out learning opportunities and continuing education to enhance both leadership and clinical skills. *

  • Seeks experiences that reflect current practice in order to maintain skills and competence in clinical practice or role performance. *

  • Maintains professional records that provide evidence of competency and lifelong learning. *

  • Evaluates one’s own integrity and nursing practice in relation to professional practice standards and guidelines, relevant statutes, rules and regulations. Takes action to achieve goals identified during the evaluation process. *

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the organization through ongoing participation at hospital and unit based meetings. *

  • Verbalizes an understanding of the value of measurement and the importance of continuous quality improvement data. Use quality measures to improve performance and accountability for patient outcomes, patient experiences and safe delivery of care. *

  • Solves quality improvement and safety problems; analyses possible solutions using prescribed quality improvement and safety methods, available evidence, experience, situational judgment and precedents. *

  • Participates in research activities such as helping to identify clinical problems in practice, assisting in data collection, and appropriately uses research findings in clinical practice. *

  • Use current healthcare research findings and other evidence to expand clinical knowledge, enhance role performance, and increase knowledge of professional issues. *

  • Thorough and confidential maintenance of patient charts and records. *

  • Document ongoing status, interventions, patient response and outcomes in accurate, timely manner. *

  • Use information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making. *

  • Adapts to rapidly changing technology as evidenced by competency in technology and equipment used in the patient care setting. *

  • Provides leadership, support and coordination to nursing and support staff. *

  • May participate in the interviewing and selection process. *

  • Responsible for orienting, training and mentoring staff and students. *

  • Assists in directing, organizing and prioritizing all shift activities ensuring patient care and staff needs are met. *

  • Ensures appropriateness of admissions/cases to the unit/department and that appropriate staff skill mix exists to provide safe patient care. Manages admissions, transfers, and discharges to/from the unit/department to prevent the need for divert, reschedule and/or readmission.

  • Provides feedback and recommendations regarding staff performance. *

  • Conduct audits regarding documentation, patient charges and outcomes. *

  • Problem solves immediate issues that may negatively impact patient care. *

  • Assists leadership in identifying, developing and implementing process improvement initiatives. *

  • Demonstrates understanding of fiscal accountability by monitoring supply usage and costs at the unit level.

  • Assists manager/director with strategic planning related to the department.

  • Assists manager/director with maintaining staff and department compliance with all regulatory and accreditation agencies.

Physical Requirements

  • Medium Work - exert/lift up to 50 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. constantly
