What You Will Do:

Under the general direction of a Clinical Manager, the Coordinator assumes administrative responsibility for the ASSIGNED UNIT/DEPARTMENT. The function of the Patient Care Coordinator is to insure the prompt, safe and effective care of the patient. Serves as a liaison between administration and staff as well as assists unit personnel, physicians, and other staff in problem solving, interpretation of institutional policies and procedures, and coordination of patient care services.

The Patient Care Coordinator is a member of the Nursing Management Team with responsibility and accountability for the operations of the Operating Room. The Patient Care Coordinator (PCC) provides overall supervision to the operating room staff, support staff. The PCC functions as a role model, and promotes positive working relationships. The PCC is responsible for communicating patient, physician, visitors and facility problems to the Clinical Manager. In addition, the PCC participates in the planning for the unit and supports performance and budgetary initiatives established by the department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees and is responsible for the unit/department staff.
  • Provides overall supervision, training and evaluation in accordance with UMMC – Midtown Campus and specific, respective departmental policies and procedures. (a)Interviews and recommends to the Clinical Manager/Director hiring of the staff. (b)Conducts annual performance evaluations of nursing staff, recommends disciplinary measures and implements when directed by clinical manager/director. (c)Identifies learning needs of staff. Assists with the creation and implementation of the orientation program for new staff. (d)Serves as a resource to nursing staff and surgical personnel.e.Promotes professional development of staff.
  • Acts as the primary resource for nursing personnel, responds appropriately to clinical issues; guides and directs staff according to nursing standards and practice
  • Designs and manages systems to facilitate patient flow, as well as actively participates in materials and technology acquisition as appropriate to improve overall efficiency and patient safety.
  • Actively participates in unit/hospital committees, representing the interests of the assigned unit/department.
  • Assists with the completion of biweekly payroll for nursing staff as requested.
  • Actively participates in and leads discussion of purchasing needs, quality results, and patient feedback in order to problem solve and develop methods to improve quality of care and service as assigned. Follows up and supports efforts of colleagues to implement improvement action plans.
  • Takes a proactive approach to managing actual and potential problems with patient management specific to the operating room and surgical staff.
  • Collaborates with the nursing manager, director and/or division leadership on long and short term planning. Facilitates change within department/unit to meet organizational goals.
  • Interprets and enforces hospital and nursing policies, practices and procedures with staff and other members of the health team in a consistent, equitable manner.
  • Records any scheduling changes, staffing changes, absences, and/or reassignments on appropriate staffing sheets; including entering of information onto staffing and scheduling systems.
  • Makes independent staffing decisions for on coming shift in accordance unit census volumes by reassigning, calling-in or canceling personnel per established policies.
  • Provides written justification for staffing variances (i.e. overtime, bonus, matrices) to appropriate Clinical Manager/ Director in a timely manner.
  • Participates in the evaluation of temporary staff in accordance with established performance standards and in collaboration with appropriate persons (i.e. Director or Clinical Manager).
  • Maintains effective intradepartmental working relationships, demonstrating skill in individual communication and as a group facilitator.
  • Routinely rounds in all patient rooms to determine progress of cases.
  • Attends and participates in at least 50% of unit staff meetings providing feedback and suggestions regarding clinical and management activities.
  • Respects the dignity, rights and confidentiality of all individuals regardless of social or economic status, personal attributes or nature of health problems.
  • Communicates changes in patients’ condition or unusual events to the Supervisor, Director or Clinical Manager.
  • Assumes flexible hours to meet the needs of the unit/department.
  • Responds and assists with crises and emergency situations on his/her shift.

  • What You Need to Be Successful:
    • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland.
    • Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred or evidence of working towards a degree.
    • Three years of recent nursing experience in an Operating Room with demonstrated supervisory abilities. One or two years of recent management experience preferred.
