What You Will Do:

Sr. RN / Clinical Nurse 1 - Psych Emergency

General Summary

Under direct supervision, performs delegated patient care functions to patients with diverse psychiatric/medical and substance abuse issues. Maintains therapeutic and rehabilitative milieu environment. Fulfillment of the job duties requires the employee to have access to medication storage areas and to transport medications to/from medication storage and delivery areas.

  • II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

    The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team in collecting information which contributes to the development of the patient’s intellectual and emotional growth. Provides appropriate therapeutic psychiatric interventions and is active in group activities with patients both on and off the units. Follows the treatment plans as outlined by the RN.
  • Facilitates unit-based activity programs, recreational activities, and participates in professional practice with the RN.
  • Under RN supervision in the child service line, structures family/patient visits to ensure safety and positive outcomes for both the patient and family through intervention and suggestion of activity. Observes and provides feedback/teaching to family caregivers during visits.
  • Participates in psycho educational groups to address social skills that enhance the growth and development of the patients. Co-leads specialty groups with treatment team members as assigned.
  • Participates in the multidisciplinary team meeting, providing input on patient’s progress. Supports the Individual Treatment Plan (ITP) by being informed of patients short term goals and interventions set by the interdisciplinary team.
  • Participates in family meetings as assigned such as IVA (Involuntary Administrative Hearing) meetings.
  • Participates in patient rounds, close observations and one to one observations. Observes and reports patient’s progress and overall condition and takes immediate action for safety in incidents where patients may become harmful to themselves or others.
  • Documents clinical observations in data/action/outcome response format in support of treatment and documentation requirements.
  • Assists in admitting, transferring and discharging patients by orienting patients to the unit, assisting with transport of patient and belongings to and from admitting, discharge and other areas of the hospital as necessary.
  • Assesses the environmental needs of the unit and recommends and/or initiates appropriate action in coordination with professional staff. Completes environmental/safety rounds at the beginning of each shift.
  • Takes, records and reports patient’s vital signs which include blood pressure, temperature, respiration, and/or pulse on a schedule basis and other information as requested by an RN. Obtains specimens for laboratory examination. Weighs patient and records data; observes patient condition for signs/symptoms consistent with illness; reports observations about patient condition to the nurse.
  • Provides physical care to patients as delegated/instructed by RN. Bathes, dresses, and assists patients to establish and maintain their daily personal hygiene care and other daily living activities, such as, feeding and ambulation; responds to patient call-lights, as needed. Performs uncomplicated procedures (i.e. EKG, rhythm strips, blood drawing, etc.).
  • Performs related duties associated with basic patient care, such as, picking-up blood, delivering specimens to clinical laboratories, performing minor housekeeping and escorting patients when assigned by nursing staff. Transports patients and runs errands. Accompanies patients to diagnostic testing areas as directed and remains with patient.
  • Initiates C.P.R. procedure as needed.
  • Attends all mandatory hospital/department in-services including CPR and Aggression Management Training, Fire Safety, TB Training, and competencies in psychiatry. Participates in in-service training activities and staff meetings.
  • Assists with the orientation of fellow staff members by explaining unit policies and procedures.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities and act as a contributing member of subsequent committees.

  • What You Need to Be Successful:

    Education and Experience

    Masters Degree required.

  • CPR certification is required.
  • Education requirements for each Psychiatric service line:
  • For the Adult Psych service line: Minimum one (1) year experience in psychiatric, behavioral, or mentally retarded patient care work preferred.
  • For the Geropsych service line: Minimum one (1) year of experience working with older adults is required.
  • For the Child Psych service line: Minimum of one (1) year experience working with children is required.
  • IV. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of universal blood and body fluids precautions and aseptic technique is required. Knowledge of basic patient care skills, such as bathing, taking and recording vital signs, feeding and weighing patients is required.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and awareness to the needs of patients, visitors and co-workers and responds promptly to verbal and/or written instructions.
  • Highly effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required to work with patients, visitors, and other healthcare team members to establish working relationships that foster optimal quality of patient care.
  • Ability to learn and perform CPR procedure is required.
  • Ability to learn and apply various psychiatric and patient care techniques, such as Aggression Management, Fire & Safety, Infection Control and routine nursing practice. Attends 4 hours of non-mandatory in-service per year.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient populations(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain courteous and effective relationships with patients, visitors, co-workers, and other members of the health care team.
  • Valid MD state driver’s license is required for the Geropsych service line.
  • V. Patient Safety

    Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge
