Position: Nurse Practitioner (Mental Health Service Line )
Work Schedule: 0745-1630, occasional on-call coverage for evenings, nights and weekends
Functional Statement Title: Advanced Practice Nurse Practitioner

The selected candidate will serve predominantly in an outpatient position in the Mental Health Service Line of the Salem VAMC, Salem, Virginia. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing duties to include, but not limited to the following:

-Uses sound clinical judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating care for the Veteran Population.
-Provides leadership in managing/coordinating care for patients, assuming responsibility and accountability for actions.
-Completes initial assessments and reassessments o patient's condition and response to treatment and other clinical findings.
-Initiates and/or recommends laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and/o specialty referrals based on protocols, clinical practice guidelines and/or standards of care.
-Serves as a resource and advocate for the protection of patient/family rights and personal values and belief systems.
-Maintains confidentiality and leads others in appropriately safeguarding confidential information.
-Follows hospital policy/procedure of VHA guidelines on utilization or appropriate medications, laboratory tests and/or diagnostic studies.
-Identifies potential problems involving resources or safety and takes action to improve resource utilization and/or safety of patients/staff.
-Actively plans and pursues self-development of knowledge and skills by literature review, continuing education, certification and /or formal education.
-Identifies need for staff education at the unit/team/work group level, and organizes and leads staff in presentation of the groups educational information.
-Assist team triage inpatient consults in order to expedite urgent outpatient consults.
-Participates in clinical research programs when appropriate.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
