Position Summary

Leads and coordinates Perioperative Services and/or Specialty Service line; directs and supervises functions and activities; maintains a smooth workflow; interprets policies, procedures, standards, and regulations as appropriate. Ensures that care is delivered to each patient in accordance with quality standards. Acts as liaison between physician and patient care team. Maintains communication and promotes cooperation with other departments. Supervises the workers of that department, authorizing work procedures and assigning duties. Coaches and mentors staff by identifying strengths and learning needs; provides encouragement and creates a climate of trust and empowerment using independent judgment or in collaboration with the manager. Effectively recommends, writes and delivers staff performance evaluations. Has decision making authority across shifts. Promotes the utilization of an electronic health record and assists associates in understanding proper electronic documentation. Performs duties in any nursing capacity as needed in assigned clinical area(s). Collaborates with the Clinical Educator regarding staff development and competencies. Supports department in absence of the Manager with Administrative back-up. Performs other duties as assigned by Manager to accomplish overall department and hospital objectives

Education Requirements

  • BSN preferred

Work Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in related department

License/Certifications

  • RN licensure in the State of Colorado

  • Certification preferred

  • Current BLS

Position Duties (Essential Functions, Include % of Time)

Manages Patient Plan of Care:

  • Performs in circulating role as needed

  • Assists members of the surgical care team with room set-up, supplies, equipment based on surgeon’s preference. Provides professional nursing care for patients as needed.

  • Assesses patients' physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of records and clinical data. Evaluates patient’s response and intervenes in a timely manner to ensure optimal patient outcome

  • Demonstrates ability to develop an individual assessment and plan of care according to patient needs, established standards of care, and procedures of the unit; Consistently performs accurate reassessments based on the patient condition, critically analyzing trends or changes in patient response, communicating information to appropriate personnel

  • Implements patient plan of care and observes outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and physician directions utilizing critical thinking, including:

  • Assessment of patient needs, i.e., positioning, equipment, supplies, etc.

  • Nursing diagnosis and physician preference cards

  • Family involvement as appropriate

  • Patient and family educational needs as appropriate

  • Assess Continuum of Care planning needs

  • Accountable for the planning and delivery of quality patient care in partnership with physician, interdisciplinary team and patient/family; Maintains and implements patient plan of care consistent with the standards of the unit

  • Effectively performs a variety of therapeutic / diagnostic interventions including, but not limited to, IV’s, wound care, medication administration, specimen collection, catheterization, other designated procedures

  • Ensures safety of each patient in least restrictive manner

  • Ensures cleanliness of environment of care and equipment and proper use of sterile supplies

  • Delegates to RN and non-RN personnel in accordance with the State Board of Nursing and hospital policy; with tasks appropriate to team members based on their role and abilities

Maintains Documentation:

  • Thorough and confidential maintenance of patient electronic record; Documents ongoing status, interventions, patient response and outcomes in an accurate, timely manner

  • Acts as a consultant to the team on proper documentation

  • Performs documentation audits and develops any new documentation programs needed to meet the requirements of the regulatory agencies ; Develops/implements resolutions to address deficiencies

Leadership in team lead role:

  • A role model in fairness, positive and cooperative attitude and exemplifies the mission of the hospital

  • Provides leadership for service line in being responsible for delegating and supervising personnel, who participate in the provision of care, to ensure that patient needs and expected treatment outcomes are met.

  • Assists and/or maintains staff schedule, call schedule and daily assignments.

  • Effectively coordinates the activities of the service line using face-to-face communication with staff as well as using tools such as the OR board to display scheduled surgeries and assignments, important patient information (including anesthesia coverage)

  • Directs, organizes and prioritizes all shift activities ensuring needs are met for patients, physicians, Reps and staff or as directed by Manager

  • Anticipates needs of provider, staff, patient and family

  • Effectively uses time, personnel, equipment and supplies to provide high quality, cost effective delivery of patient care

  • Promotes an efficient , smooth work flow in the ORs by actively making rounds, assisting staff as needed

  • Assigns staff to ensure adequate surgical team coverage to meet patient needs

  • Delegates and coordinates care of patient in defined team

  • Communicates closely with and supports team regarding daily operations of specialty

  • Assists with room turnovers and set up to insure efficiency of surgery start times

  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge relating to surgical and hospital standards of quality care and patient safety by:

  • Maintaining accurate preference cards as needed

  • Communicating with vendors for surgeon’s and case needs

  • Collaborates with Manager/team any necessary changes to physician surgery set-up preferences including equipment and instrumentation


    • Acts as liaison with physicians, patients, staff, vendors when problems occur

    • Problem solves issues immediately that may negatively impact patient care and team environment

    • Assists in staff selection, orientation and development.

    • Performs duties in any nursing capacity as needed in the area and acts as a staff resource.

    • Acts as clinical resource to staff and explains changes in the department, system policy and procedures

    • Maintains high skill level through ongoing education/meeting attendance and shares learning with staff

    • Assists in counseling of employees regarding work performance on a daily basis,

    • Enhances staff’s professional development and quality of care through observation, verbal critique, coaching, education and training

    • Identifies clinical and operational needs of the service line and coordinates with staff and management to develop and implement interdisciplinary action plan

    • Actively supports management in establishing standards of care in meeting regulatory standards and participates in improvement plans.

    • Functions independently in services performed in assigned specialty

    • Participates in hospital/departmental meetings and committees; Participates in community-based activities as needed

    • Adapts to readily changing technologies, policies, regulations, census, and staffing through priority setting and flexibility

    • Fulfills preceptor role that includes orienting staff, supervising and monitoring performance, provides assistance as needed, communicates observations, evaluates the ability of employee to set and meet learning outcomes and validates accomplishments, checks the level of preparation for assigned patients ensures competencies are maintained, submits reviews of performance as requested by the Manager and/or OR Nurse Educator

    • In collaboration with management and CQI representative, designs and implements CQI program, analyzing results to improve both the CQI and training initiatives

    • Ensures that results of quality improvement activities are integrated into nursing practice

    • Researches and presents pertinent clinical literature to staff members

    • Acts as clinical resource to unit personnel; available to staff on off-shifts to answer clinical questions

    Stewardship:

    • Assists with staffing to meet department budget while delivering quality care

    • Promotes awareness of teamwork, quality and cost containment

    • Provides input on operational and capital budget based on physician and staff needs; works with manager and staff to maintain budget guidelines

    • Completes necessary paperwork to request the trialing or purchasing of new supplies/equipment via Value Analysis process or Capital request process- including written justification

    • Knowledge of equipment/supply repair cost and services; monitors safety of equipment with management approval, authorizes repairs as necessary and completes required work requests

    • Knowledge of patient charges; identifies, reviews and updates charges with Management to develop and maintain departmental cost effectiveness

    • Adapts to readily changing technologies, policies, regulations, census, and staffing through priority setting and flexibility

    • Maintains high skill level through ongoing education/meeting attendance and shares learning with staff

    • Maintains and implements patient plan of care consistent with the standards of the unit

    • Creates and updates specialty standards for services/procedures, etc.
