The
Division of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology is located within the hospital (SZ
campus) and at the Rockville, Maryland Children's National Imaging (CNI) site.
The Division reports up to Senior Leadership through the Center for
Hospital-Based Specialties.

The
Division offers imaging services for a complete range of pediatric diseases and
conditions. All diagnostic imaging and radiology exam requests are initiated
and ordered by a Licensed Independent Practitioner.

The
day-to-day operations of the Division are the responsibility of the Division
Chief and the Director, Radiology Operations. The Division Chief reports to the
Senior Vice President of the Center for Hospital-Based Specialties.

Services
provided at the main hospital include general radiography, fluoroscopy, special
procedures (interventional), nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography,
ultrasound, computerized axial tomography, bone densitometry, and magnetic
resonance imaging. Portable radiographic units are available throughout the hospital
for patients who cannot travel to the department. Mobile fluoroscopy is
provided as needed.

Services
provided at Children’s National Imaging (Rockville, Maryland) include general
radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computerized axial tomography, and
magnetic resonance imaging. Services at the CNI site are available Monday
through Friday 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

The
division located within the main hospital (SZ campus) provides service 24
hours/day, 7 days a week for general radiography, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, and
computerized axial tomography. Special procedures, nuclear medicine, positron
emission tomography, bone densitometry, and magnetic resonance imaging have
varied schedules and on-call coverage for certain shifts. A Radiologist is present
in-house 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. A radiology administrator is available
via pager to assist with any issues that arise during the second shift, third
shift, or on weekends.

General
radiography services are also provided at two of the Regional Outpatient
Centers in Maryland (Annapolis, Laurel Lakes). The hours of operation are
Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The Radiology Nurse encompasses the care of the patient and family/legal guardian. Pre-sedation, sedation, monitoring, and post sedation services are provided to care for a range of ages from infants to adults. The Radiology Nurse is responsible for the sedation needs of the patient in collaboration with anesthesiologists and radiologists. In addition to the sedation activities, the Radiology Nurse cares for the acute and critically ill patient population during radiology exams and procedures in collaboration with the radiology team to facilitate patient flow through the scheduled exams or procedures. Patient care activities include peripheral and central line access, Contrast administration, urinary catheterizations, assessing/triaging phone consults and requests, pre-procedure patient and family education and support during the exam or procedure. The radiology teams welcome the nursing lead on safety and emergency equipment checks and regulatory compliance responsibilities.

Minimum of 2 years' experience in the field of ICU, ED or an area with sedation activities.

Required Skills/Knowledge

The licensed Registered Nurse will successfully complete the hospital and nursing orientation at Children’s National. Prior experience in a sedation environment preferred. Successful completion of programs/competencies within the orientation period to include the Pediatric Advanced Life Support course, MRI competency, Radiation Safety competency, and Moderate, Procedural and Deep Sedation competency. Knowledge and appropriate use of Contrast Agents and Radioisotopes. Application of the nursing process in sedation preparation, monitoring and recovery of the pediatric patient. Ability to organize, establish priorities and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Must have clinical knowledge in disease and syndromes to complete the health risk assessment for sedation procedures, and communicate findings to the radiologists and anesthesiologists. Flexibility required adjusting work assignments to care for the scheduled outpatients, critical care and acute care inpatients, and ED patients within several departments of the Division of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiology. Computer skills are a must to maneuver between several information systems to obtain patient information, scheduling of exams, and documentation of care. Demonstrate skills in negotiation and crisis management to effectively remain on-time in numerous departments; must be decisive and able to perform under tense, emotional and stressful situations. Must demonstrate compassion and a customer service orientation when dealing with families, patients and co-workers. Delivery of culturally sensitive, age-specific care to identified populations. Prevention and reporting of unusual occurrences and adverse events. Keep knowledge base current with new information or changes in specialty area. Must maintain clinical skills and required continuing education credits for nursing license.
