All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children’s National Policies and Procedures, and in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires registered professional nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice. Children’s National supports the development of RN relationships within the community; specifically those relationships associated with the health and well being of the community at large. The Clinical Apheresis Program Coordinator will provide therapeutic apheresis procedures for patients. Will administer a Blood Donor Center Quality Program, and assist with the administration and management of the Blood Donor Center. Position has a dotted line reporting relationship to Nursing. Will coordinate with manager and Nursing Executive to ensure consistent institution-wide compliance with standards of nursing practice. Available for after hours, weekend, holiday, and on-call when needed for therapeutic apheresis.

At least 5 years as a registered nurse required. Two (2) years of apheresis, dialysis, ICU, Bone-marrow Transplant, Hematology/Oncology, or similar experience preferred.

Required Skills/Knowledge

Must be licensed in the District of Columbia and successfully complete the hospital and nursing orientation at CNMC. Analytical ability to compute and detect errors in reports or machine processed data. Numerical ability to analyze statistical data to determine adherence to accrediting agency standards (AABB, CAP FDA, FACT, TJC, etc.). Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development for all ages served. Demonstrates ability to assess and interpret age-specific data about the patient's status. Provides age-appropriate care for all ages served. Demonstrates expertise in knowledge and skills required for successful operation of therapeutic apheresis procedures. Demonstrates knowledge in cellular collections and depletions utilizing disease entities and pathophysiology. Demonstrates competency in the initial management of patient emergencies and appropriate follow through activities. Demonstrates an understanding of the importance of accurate fluid volume management and patient safety.
Experience with Hospital Information System, especially Cerner, is preferred.

  • Actively participate in Blood Donor Center Quality Program; maintain records to meet hospital, AABB, FACT, FDA, CAP, and TJC standards and requirements; perform and maintain records of quality control on a daily basis for the Blood Donor Center.

  • Participate in the Quality Programs of the Division of Laboratory Medicine and CNMC.

  • Accurately and completely maintain patient records, including computer records.

  • Inform manager or director and appropriately reports obstacles to the conduct of daily activities, variances in activities or procedures from approved operating protocols, non-routine instrument problems, and non-routine problems in patient care

  • Assist in supervising personnel with troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and daily activities of the Blood Donor Center.

  • Assist with supervision of and participation in ongoing quality assurance procedures and/or activities in compliance with inspection standards/requirements.

  • Participate in education of medical staff in apheresis processes and adverse reactions; assist medical directors with patient/parent counseling and educational initiatives.

  • Provide technical direction to donor center staff on apheresis procedures; assist with training and supervision of therapeutic apheresis processing and management.

  • Assist with preparation of training protocols and procedures; review and update procedure manuals.

  • Provide input for staff performance evaluations.
