The Registered Nurse is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting all aspects of patient care.  He/she will work closely with all health care providers to facilitate and coordinate efficient, effective, quality health care.  The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the appropriate life span; possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs; and, have the ability to provide care needed by the pertinent patient group(s).  He/she will implement and/or comply with all the policies, procedures and standards of the unit, department and the institution.



1.         Performs initial and on-going physical and psychosocial assessment according to accepted standards of nursing practice.*

2.         Assesses plans and evaluates patient care needs.*

3.         Carries out physician orders.*

4.         Administers prescribed medications, monitors vital signs and lab results, completes all treatments ordered by physician, assists with activities of daily living for patients.*

5.         Participates in treatment team conferences to assist in planning and revising goals, objectives and     interventions appropriate to the age-related and problem-specific needs of each patient. Assist with activities of daily living as necessary for patients.*

6.         Implements nursing plan of care for assigned patients and conducts and/or co-leads group therapy sessions for patients.*

7.         Evaluates patients response to interventions and revises nursing plan of care as needed.*

8.         Collaborates with the treatment team to revise goals, objectives and interventions appropriate to the changes in patient status.*

9.         Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems.*                                                                     

10.        Provides behavioral health care interventions utilizing the least restrictive interventions. *

11.        Provides for the safety of patients, visitors and staff.  Completes routine and special safety checks.

12.        Instructs and educates patients and families.*

13.        Actively participates in quality management activities by timely reporting of staff, family, visitor or quality concerns. In addition upholds all quality and safety initiatives on the behavioral health unit.  *

14.        Assesses and coordinates patients discharge planning needs with members of the healthcare team.*

15.        Provides age and culturally appropriate care.*

16.        Orients and mentors new staff members.*

17.        Uses Outlook email system (HCA email) to routinely read email messages.*

18.        Uses the Meditech documentation system to document daily documentation of patient care. *

19.        Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required. *

20.        Pursues own professional growth through continuing education and inservices.*

21.        Communicates effectively with staff, peers, supervisor, external and internal customers.*

22.        Adheres to hospital policies and procedures; supports the mission of the hospital.*

23.        Provides supervision to mental health technicians in the charge nurse role.*

24.        Function as a flexible staff member who works in a variety of roles including functioning to complete mental health technician duties, sitting with behavioral health patients and floating to other floors to sit with behavioral health patients and function in the scope of practice.
