What You Will Do:

  • Screens, and evaluates cytological specimens before pathologist's review.
  • Maintains equipment and performs quality control.
  • Performs the full range of procedures offered in the Cytology section, according to outlines in the "Procedure" manual.
  • Participates in performing and reviewing proficiency testing.
  • Assesses the acceptability of specimens and rejects specimens in the basis of written protocols.
  • Records, reports, or posts test results as required by department procedure.
  • Examines specimens microscopically for evidence of disease, makes provisional diagnoses, and refers specimen to pathologists.
  • Marks abnormal results and brings them to the attention of the supervisor, or pathologist.
  • Troubleshoots technical problems.
  • Determines accuracy and validity of quality control results and initiates corrective action.
  • Participates in the training and orientation of new employees to the Cytology section.
  • Participates in the evaluation of new methodologies and procedures.
  • Assembles supplies and equipment.
  • Assures proper functioning and cleanliness of equipment and work area.
  • Assists in the planning, organization, and prioritization of work duties to accomplish objectives.
  • Participates in continuing education activities.
  • Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Manual.
  • Responds to the following Shore Health System codes: Code Red (in the immediate area), Code Pink (when called), Code D (when called).
  • Responsible for honest behavior in all matters.
  • To the best of the employee’s knowledge and understanding, complies with all Federal and State laws and regulations.
  • Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.
  • Uses and discloses only that information, which is necessary to perform the function of the job.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • What You Need to Be Successful:
    • Certification as a Cytologist, (CT)
    • (ASCP), or registry eligible.
    • Must meet applicable federal, state, and local professional requirements.
