What You Will Do:



The GI Endoscopy Laboratories provide inpatients and outpatients gastrointestinal diagnostic and therapeutic services. Major diagnoses represented in the patient population served by the GI Endoscopy Laboratories team include upper and lower GI bleeds, anemia with unknown etiology, gastric and duodenal ulcers, dysphagia, odynaphagia, esophageal masses and strictures, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, polyps, GI carcinomas, pancreatitis, cholelithiasis, and other conditions of the GI tract. Approximately seventy-five percent of the patient population are outpatients and twenty-five percent are inpatients.

This role is designed for the nurse who has achieved expertise in her clinical and professional role. He/she leads and evaluates evidence based practice, actively participates and/or leads organizational initiatives, mentors and coaches nurses and other disciplines, exemplifies the role of the professional nurses and demonstrates active involvement in clinical and professional nursing beyond the walls of the unit and/or organization.



What You Need to Be Successful:



Education & Experience

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.

  • Maintenance of 30 contact hours of education every two years.

  • Current CPR certification required.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. BSN required for hires after July 1, 2008
  • Nurses on UMMC payroll by 7/1/08 must have a Bachelor’s degree or active enrollment with graduation within 5 years of promotion. Bachelor’s degree can be in any field through June 2012. External candidates must have BSN.

  • Member of a professional organization.
  • Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.

  • IV. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to lead others, such as effectiveness as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a multidisciplinary team member.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
