What You Will Do:

University of Maryland Medical Center - Midtown Campus has had a long history of working to keep our community healthy. Located in Baltimore’s cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 200-bed non-profit, community teaching hospital, and part of the University of Maryland Medical System. Main Function:

Reporting to the PICC Line Program Coordinator, the PICC Nurse is responsible for assisting with the scheduling, placement, verification, and billing of PICC Lines and Central Lines ordered at UMMC Midtown Campus. PICC Nurse will promote teamwork with the physicians, Nurses and other personnel from all units/areas/departments to assure continuity of care for the PICC Line and Central Line patients. The PICC Nurse is an RN and as such is responsible for assuring the nursing process is followed for patients while they are under his/her care. As an RN, he/she must also stay current with standards of practice, such as the Nurse Practice Act, through ongoing education relevant to nursing. The RNs actions and attitude will promote and support the hospital’s mission and core values.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implements clinical services to meet department goals to achieve quality, and cost objectives. Assist with the implementation of department productivity and utilization management goals to ensure optimum functioning of unit.
  • 1.1 Collaborates effectively with clinical and medical staff in achieving program development needs, and in utilizing identifying requirements for PICC services. Demonstrates a system approach to planning and implementation at the organization’s level.
    1.2 Assist with the implementation of clinical services which are responsive to customer requirements, utilizing the input and participation of staff while maximizing productivity and effectiveness of work processes.

    2. Provides a patient care delivery system which assures consistency, quality and cost effectiveness of patient care services across the continuum of care.

    3. After notification of an order for a PICC Line or Central Lines, performs an initial evaluation to determine that the patient is a candidate for the procedure. Does so in a timely fashion

    4.Reviews all PICC Line and Central Line orders and schedules patients for placement, taking into consideration any other procedures/tests scheduled for the patient.
    5. Meets with the patient to explain the procedure and obtain consent.
    6. Performs assessments to determine the best location for the procedure depending on the patient’s individual needs. Performs post insertion reassessment.

    7. Assures that nursing policies, procedures and operating practices are in compliance with standards set by external regulatory and accrediting agencies.

    7.1 Follows TJC and CMS standards as part of routine practice.

    7.2 Performs PICC and Central Line insertion procedure according to guidelines and infection control standards.

    7.3 After procedure, ensures catheter tip placement for both PICC and acute CVC’s. Ensures a baseline pulmonary assessment according to policy MC169 and NSG023.

    7.4 Completes all necessary documentation on the procedure and the patient’s tolerance and condition during and following the procedure.

    7.5 Maintains equipment to assure the necessary equipment is clean, functioning, and available for the procedure. Inventories supplies to assure these are available for the procedure.
    8. Demonstrates fiscal accountability by achieving outcomes within allocated reasons by completing billing processes to assure the patient is charged accurately and the information is entered in a timely fashion

    9. Encourages and support education, training and professional activities.
    9.1 Maintains certification and annual requirements necessary to remain qualified to perform PICC Line and Central Line Insertions.
    9.2 Promotes teamwork with the physicians, the nurses, and other personnel from all unit/areas/departments to assure continuity of care for the patients.
    9.3 Utilizes effective communication strategies to assure that staff is informed of changes in a timely manner.
    9.4 Identifies problem areas pertaining to the PICC/CVP insertion program and take appropriate actions or make recommendations to correct inappropriate activities.
    9.5 Identifies learning needs of staff.

    10. Attends and actively participates in unit staff meetings.

    11. Participates in shared governance activities.

    12. Demonstrates support and compliance with UMMC Midtown Campus’ mission, vision, values, philosophy, goals and objectives and policies.

    13. Performs additional functions to assist the PICC Coordinator and other activities as assigned.

    What You Need to Be Successful:

    | Licensure:

    Currently licensed in the State of Maryland.
    BLS and ACLS certification

    Graduate from an approved Nursing School. Certification in PICC line insertion. Certification in Central line insertion.
    At least 2 years of Critical Care experience as an RN.
    Positive interpersonal/communication/supervisory skills needed. Requires good organizational skills. Computer skills preferred.
