At least 1-2 years of related experience required. Pediatric experience preferred but not required.

Required Skills/Knowledge

Ability to perform technical functions, interactions with children and families and good verbal/written communication. Demonstrate competence in assisting with procedures.
Preferred knowledge of EHR software.

Licensed Practical Nurse

Functional Accountabilities

Clinical Process

  • Differentiate a new problem from a long term problem at the time of admission/clinic visit.

  • Accurately take TPR, BP, height and weight, head circumference, and intake and output measurements according to procedures.

  • Recognize basic changes in child such as: apnea, wheezing, retractions, changes in behavior or LOC, seizure activity, skin lesions, and poor tissue perfusion.

  • Recognize physical and behavioral changes for groups of patients usually cared for in the assigned area.

  • Collect and test specimens according to procedure and unit policy.
  • Unit Functions

  • Accept patient assignments and participate with the primary nurse in implementing and documenting care.

  • Recognize and remain with any child in distress, immediately institute Basic Life Support procedures if necessary.

  • Follow physician’s orders and nursing directive precisely.

  • Follow protocols for code Blue, Fire and Disaster plans.

  • Carry out STAT orders immediately within the parameters of the LPN Job Description.
  • Patient/Family Services

  • Orient children and families to the geography and regulation of the area and expected routines of the child; prepare all assigned children for examination, procedure, or surgery according to the standards and incorporate principles of growth and development.

  • Teach families how to administer routine PRN & PO medications while at home including effects, side effects, and dosage according to preprinted sheets or guidelines outlines by primary nurse.

  • Implement aspects of the education plan throughout hospitalization/clinic visit, under the direction of the Registered Nurse or physician as appropriate; provide feedback to RN regarding patient/families to teach.

  • Regularly consult with other nurses and refer to resources on the unit and in the library to gain procedures.

  • Attend unit/hospital in-service education programs.
  • Communication

  • Conduct a patient history in order to elicit information and establish the chold's normal baseline routine.

  • Respond to inquiries from families by answering questions, and explaining information clearly and thoroughly.

  • Refer to physicians and registered nurse as indicated.

  • Comfort a child using redirection such as touch, talking, etc.
