Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Nurse Practitioner-Stroke Center.

In this role, the successful candidate's primary responsibility will be to provide care to inpatients and outpatients of the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation and Lutheran Augustana Center. The NP will follow established standards, procedures, and practices, and give specific patient care directions to nursing and other staff. The NP will perform all other tasks as required by the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide direct care to individuals and families consistent with the Philosophy of NYU Lutheran and the departmental/institutional goals. This includes the provision of safety, well being of patients and visitors, and maintenance of patient rights and confidentiality.
  • Provide diagnostic and assessment services to patients in the department of neurology and rehabilitation utilizing a problem solving approach:
    a. Obtain an appropriate history and perform physical examination on patients in neurology and rehabilitation and/or on assigned patients.
    b. Write appropriate orders, including those for narcotics, stimulants and depressant drugs.
    c. Take into consideration the age, growth and developmental stage of the patient when assessment, treatment and/or care is being rendered.
    d. Implement therapeutic regimen or protocol appropriate for the diagnosis in accordance with institutional protocols.
    e. Monitor the patient's response to therapeutic regimen.
    f. Notify the attending of changes in patient's condition and consult with specialists and/or preceptor for complex patient care situations.
    g. Make appropriate referrals to specialists and community resources.
    h. Collaboratively work with other health professionals and families of patients in the physical and emotional transitions of admission, care and discharge.
  • Provide preventive health services including counseling and teaching in health maintenance and problem-related areas.
  • Document all patient encounters including:
    a. history and physical exam
    b. treatments rendered
    c. patient teaching
    d. follow-up
    e. referral
  • Maintain required unit records, reports, and statistics necessary for administrative purposes and reimbursement.
  • Perform emergency life-saving procedures in the absence of a physician.
  • Participate in rounds with the attending staff and/or with the staff physicians and house staff.
  • Participate in activities fostering professional growth and maintenance of certification.
  • Participate in activities relating to Quality Improvement as needed.
  • Participate in committees as appropriate.
  • Attend all scheduled departmental meetings/conferences.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required by Chief of Neurology, Assistant Director of Stroke, Neuro-interventional, Stroke, Epilepsy and Neurology Attendings and Vice President of Neurology and Rehabilitation.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify, you must have a Graduate of a an accredited School of Nursing.
Graduate of a professional degree program as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner.
Must be currently licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of New York.
Must possess a current Nurse Practitioner certification from an accredited certifying organization and upon hire will be required to meet the Continuing Education requirements for recertification.
Within 6 months of hire, must obtain 8 hours of Stroke and 8 hours of Neurocritical care continuing education credits.
DEA license upon hire.
BCLS and ACLS upon hire.
Ability to work collaboratively with physicians and other health care providers..
