What You Will Do:



The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), a 19 bed unit provides care to critically ill pediatric patients ages neonates through young adults with medical, surgical, and cardiac surgery diagnoses. A team of PICU physicians, NPs, respiratory therapists and nurses from the pediatric ICU respond to pediatric patients requiring critical interventions on the inpatient units/outpatient hospital based clinics as members of the Pediatric Arrest Team and Pediatric Rapid Response Process.
PICU Mission
The Pediatric Intensive/Intermediate Care Unit is a 19-bed unit that provides expert multidisciplinary care for children from infants to young adults with life-threatening medical, cardiac and surgical conditions. We meet the unique needs of these specialized populations by integrating safety-focused, family-centered patient care with superb service, while individualizing patient education and psycho-social support. We endeavor to incorporate current evidence and innovative research into our practice, throughout the continuum of care.
This role is designed for the nurse who has achieved expertise in her clinical and professional role. He/she leads and evaluates evidence based practice, actively participates and/or leads organizational initiatives, mentors and coaches nurses and other disciplines, exemplifies the role of the professional nurses and demonstrates active involvement in clinical and professional nursing beyond the walls of the unit and/or organization.



What You Need to Be Successful:



Education & Experience

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required.

  • Maintenance of 30 contact hours of education every two years.

  • Current CPR certification required.

  • Bachelor’s degree required. BSN required for hires after July 1, 2008
  • Nurses on UMMC payroll by 7/1/08 must have a Bachelor’s degree or active enrollment with graduation within 5 years of promotion. Bachelor’s degree can be in any field through June 2012. External candidates must have BSN.

  • Member of a professional organization.
  • Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.

  • IV. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to lead others, such as effectiveness as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a multidisciplinary team member.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
