Job Description

The Director, Nursing (DON) is a critical member of the community leadership team . The DON is tasked with overseeing and directing the Nursing staff, ensuring the highest level of care is delivered for all residents. The DON is also responsible for driving a compliance mind-set across the team, adhering to all state regulations and company policies and procedures.


The DON must meet the following qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing with RN certification

Minimum 5-year RN; experience working with the aging population is preferred but not required

Previous leadership experience preferred

Strong organizational skills, tremendous attention to detail, and a compliance mindset

Familiarity with state/federal regulations for assisted living

Solid sense of customer-focus; excellent interpersonal skills

Must have a bias to action

Continual learner; eager to develop and expand skillset


Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the Nursing department, as well as its programs and activities

Perform administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary

Determine the staffing needs; recommend the number and level of nursing personnel to be employed; assist in calculating the number of direct nursing personnel care on duty each shift

Develop work assignments and schedule duty hours; make daily rounds of the nursing service department to ensure all nursing personnel are performing their work assignments

Participate in the interviewing and selection of residents for admission; develop a written plan of care for each resident that identifies the problems/needs, indicated the care to be given, goals to be accomplished, and which professional service is responsible for each element of care

Prepare and plan the nursing service departments budget and submit to the Executive Director

Schedule, attend, and participate in nursing service meetings; review complaints and grievances made or filed by department personnel

Demonstrate a passion for caring as evidenced by interaction with co-workers, residents, families, and visitors


Must have sufficient hearing and visual abilities to comprehend written or verbal communication

Must be able to move intermittently throughout the work day

Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of this position

Must be able to function independently and have flexibility, personal integrity and the ability to work effectively with the residents, residents family members and co-workers

May be required to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations

Must be able to lift 35 - 50 pounds using proper body mechanics
