This position as a Nursing Assistant is located in PCS/Inpatient Medicine Service,7 North. The incumbent in this role will routinely communicate with providers, nursing personnel, administrative personnel, and other allied health professional staff using sound interpersonal skills and is constantly aware of the sensitive information. The incumbent will also plan and carry out patient care under supervision and in accordance with patient care/treatment plans, patient's charts, and instructions from the nursing/treatment team throughout the tour. Specific duties involved in this position include, but is not limited, to the following:

*Assisting physicians and nurses in the performance of diagnostic examinations.

* Performing a variety of routine diagnostic tests (such as glucometer test for blood glucose level,

collection of urine sample, etc.)

*Observing and reporting to the professional nurse changes in patient behavior.

*Providing full range of patient care to complex patients with a variety of physical and/or

behavioral problems.

* Uses good communication skills in dealing with patients, some of whom are unusually difficult

to care for or communicate with.

* Preparing patients for transport to procedures by obtaining oxygen tanks or other needed

equipment.

*Performing a wide variety of duties aimed at increasing the comfort and spirit of the patient.

Work Schedule:3 shifts available

Shift 1: 7:30am - 4:00pm (Day/Evening Rotation)

Shift 2: 3:30pm - 12midnight

Shift 3: 7:30pm - 8:00am

Basic Requirements:

*U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified

citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

*Education or Training. One year above high school with courses related to the occupation.

Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one

year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. (Must provide

proof of coursework in application package)

*Physical requirements. Must undergo pre-employment physical

*English Language Proficiency. Nursing Assistants must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.

NOTE: Grandfathering Provisions. All Nursing Assistant employed in VHA on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the series and grade held that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.

Preferred Experience:

To qualify for the GS-3 grade level (Entry Level), incumbent have completed an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant or one year of education above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation. (Must provide proof of coursework in application package)

To qualify for the GS-4 grade level, incumbent must have one year of specialized experience as a nursing assistant or experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, health technician, hospital corpsman, etc.), performing technical and nursing skills requiring knowledge of the human physical and emotional states, therapeutic communication, and technical skills required for basic and intermediate treatments;

OR

Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technicians (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED);

OR

Have a combination of both education and experience.

NOTE: You mustbe able to demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

1. Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.

2. Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.

3. Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.

4. Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals.

To qualify for the GS-5 grade level (Full Performance), incumbent must have one year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment (listed below).

OR

Have successfully completed a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED);

OR

Have a combination of both education and experience

NOTE:You must also demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

1. Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.

2. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new [NAs] by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.

3. Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment, grade levelcriteria must be met when determining the grade of the candidate.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45lbs and over), heavy carrying (45lbs and over), straight pulling (up to 2 hours), pushing (up to 2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking (up to 8 hours), standing (up to 8 hours), kneeling (up to 2 hours), repeated bending (up to 2 hours), both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, both eyes required, ability to distinguish colors, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, and clear speech and mental stability.
