VA North Texas Health Care System Sam Rayburn facility in Bonham, TX currently hasa Staff Development Specialist position for the Nursing Education Department. The Specialist reports directly to the Chief for Nursing Education:

Qualifications(All areas):

- BSN with a Master's and/or Doctorate degree in Nursing education is preferred.

- Must be an American Heart Association certified BLS, instructor status preferred. ACLS required.

-A minimum of 3-5 years of direct patient care experience and/or 2-3 years of recent clinical experience in Long-Term care preferred; including a minimum of 1-2 years in Nursing Education preferred.

Responsibilities:

a. Reports directly to the Supervisor for Nursing Education.

b. This position's primary responsibilities would be to support the Long-term Care areas, Ambulatory Care, and or other related units; supports the Nursing unit based and organizational education efforts, facilitation of unit and organizational competencies and advances critical thinking.

c. Responsible for determining staff education specific needs based on needs assessment.

d. Possess ability to work as a team member and contribute to the work groups, both patient education and staff development specialists.

e. Responsible for creating, developing, implementing and evaluating nursing education programs to include, but not limited to orientation, providing education as needed based on the organizational needs.

f. Responsible for facilitating and coordinating education working with all levels of staff and/or vendors as the situation requires.

g. Work in a collaborative fashion with key stakeholders to include Nurse Managers, Assistant Nurse Managers, staff and other SDS's.

h. Develops curricula, instructional materials, tests and evaluation tools. Makes changes to the curricula based on feedback and current clinical and/or educational evidence.

i. Promotes evidence-based educational methods and technologies that support development of nursing expertise.

j. Assists with teaching and coordination of New Employee Orientation for Nursing.

k. Assures that staff meets required competencies, both annual and unit based for area of practice.

l. Keeps current on best practice standards of nursing practice and education. Identifies policies, standards and practices not in compliance with current standards and communicates needed revisions through the nursing leadership and governance structures.

m. Possesses strong inter-personal and communication skills in written and spoken English.

n. Ability to work in a self-directed manner, collaborating and coordinating with health care professionals.

o. Willingness to travel to outlying Community Based Outpatient clinics to provide education.

p. Demonstrates flexibility in assignments and coordinates and acts as a Nurse Planner for Continuing Nursing Education (CNE).

Work Schedule: Days (7:30 am to 4:00 pm), with rotation as necessary for training

Duty Location: Primary CampusBonham with as needed training to sister campuses

Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are not authorized for this position.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Preferred Experience: A minimum of threeto five years ofdirect patient care and/or 2-3 years of clinical experience in Long-Term Care preferred; including a minimum of 1-2 years in Nursing Education preferred. American Heart Association certified BLS, instructor status preferred.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
