RN - Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Nurse Educator

Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the educational activities and programs for SCI nursing services staff within the Palo Alto Division. Works collaboratively and consults with management and multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs for staff, maintain and enhance clinical competence, and manage ongoing education and competency programs. Supports other Core Educators assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the educational activities and programs for nursing services staff within the VAPA HCS. Works collaboratively and consults with management and multidisciplinary teams to develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs for staff, maintain and enhance clinical competence, and manage ongoing education and competency programs.
The major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Works collaboratively consulting with management to assess, develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs for staff, maintain and enhance clinical competence, and manage ongoing education and competency programs.
- Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating educational activities.
- Educational focus includes but may not be limited to: care and management of complex patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), oxygen/ventilator therapy, wound management, role of nurse therapist in rehabilitation and patient self-efficacy, and other nursing functions related to clinical assessment, intervention, evaluation and documentation of the SCI non-acute/acute patient in rehabilitation setting. Provides education and training on highly technical equipment.
- Works collaboratively with and is an active member of the Clinical Practice and Professional Development Service, participating as applicable with general educational directives, training, in-services, simulation, orientation, educational programs, and BLS/ACLS training.
- Enhance and facilitate clinical excellence and professional standards and performance through the incorporation of nursing grand rounds, continuing education programs, in-services, journal clubs, student experiences, new employee and experienced staff orientation.
- U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) which changed to the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN; http://www.acenursing.org ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE; http://www.aacn.nche.edu/ ) at the time the program was completed; OR the completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration (i.e., licensure) as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or the District of Columbia.

In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

- One (1) year of full-time experience as a licensed professional nurse.
- Certified Rehabilitation Registered nurse (CRRN)
- Three (3) years of recent clinical RN experience to include acute & non-acute Rehabilitation setting
- MS/Nursing Education or MSN/Education
- BLS and ACLS instructor card preferred (issued by American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN). Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Specialist Certification preferred
- Demonstrated teaching and clinical leadership ability in the development of creative educational programs, research, performance improvement and staff development
- A thorough understanding of adult learning principles and learning methodologies. The ability to employ strategies and techniques that promote a positive learning and practice environment.
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer technology and common software programs (i.e., Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, etc.) and other electronic data and documentation programs.
- Experience with preceptor and mentoring techniques and familiarity with online learning applications and simulation technology.
- Demonstrated experience in program and project development, management and coordination.
- Demonstrate experience with statistical analysis to include data compilation
- Experience in providing care and manage patients on mechanical ventilation

Physical Requirements: This position requires heavy lifting, 45 pounds heavy carrying, 45 pounds straight pulling (2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking & standing 8 hours - intermittently; repeated bending; both legs required; ability for rapid mental& muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aide permitted). Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
