Registered Nurse-RN OR Scheduler
The Registered Nurse-Operating Room Schedulerwill provide consistent coverage of the scheduling functions. He/She will work closely with surgical staff to provide support, data, data analysis and information related to surgical procedures. The RN will share knowledge regarding record control, medical records, processing procedures, and serves as a resource to the clinical team members in administrative functions regarding record control. The position requiresa working knowledge of the organization, surgical processes, and an in-depth knowledge of surgical procedure time requirements. The RN must be able to communicate with multiple services and departments. He/She must be able to establish priorities in complex and/or emergency situations and resolve conflicts competing demands for operative time and resources. The RN exercises initiative, judgment and ability to work independently in selection of guidelines needed to complete tasks. Guidelines include AORN standards, JCAHO standards, VHA directives, VISN memorandum(s), and other references as needed. Additional duties include but are not limited to the following: scheduling surgical cases, coordinate master surgery schedule on a daily basis, evaluate/requests for surgery to ensure realistic numbers of cases and lengths or procedures to coordinate allocation of time/space by service, work collaboratively with the OR Nurse Manager, screen all surgical procedures scheduled against existing clinical privileges to ensure surgeons are privileged for requested procedures including direct scheduling from clinic,
contacts patients seven (7) days prior to the scheduled procedure to insure compliance with pre-op instructions, reinforces appointment date and time, reviews all procedure instructions, generate letters to Veterans that fail to return calls regarding scheduling an appointment for ordered procedures, notifies the OR Manager and surgeon of patients failing to schedule procedures and of incidents in which the patient cannot be contacted, cancels surgical/procedure appointment according to service agreement with approval of the OR Nurse Manager, collects Performance Improvement data on number of scheduled cases, types of cases, number of cases performed, number of cancelled cases, and other similar Operating Room Performance Improvement Metrics. The Registered Nurse-OR Scheduler will be assigned to Nursing Service (Building 7)under the leadership of Associate Director-Patient Care Services.The incumbent is subject to completion of two years probationary period .
Tour of Duty: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Must be proficient in spoken and written English.
Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected.
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. Education/Experience Requirements:
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
- Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
