  General Summary

Provides direct and indirect patient care under the direction of the Patient Care Coordinators. Collaborates with other members of the surgical team to ensure the highest standard of care. Accepts assignment to care for, take responsibility for, and advocate for an individual patient by coordinating efforts of the surgical team. The OR nurse addresses the physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, and spiritual responses of the patient while maintaining an environment that ensures safety and compliance with administrative policies and procedures. The OR nurse has the requisite skills and knowledge to assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, and evaluate the outcomes of interventions.

Essential Functions
  • Circulator: Demonstrates knowledge and competency in clinical and technical skills. Utilizes professional judgment to direct, manage, and delegate the nursing aspects of care throughout the perioperative phase. Directs, guides and oversees care not encompassing “administrative management” of allied health personnel (e.g. lab tech, x-ray tech, etc.).
  • Arranges and provides environmental control of the operating room to appropriately accommodate the assigned surgical procedure. Assists in procuring procedural equipment and supplies and opening of sterile supplies for each surgical procedure prior to patient entering the room. Continues to procure needed items for the duration of the case.
  • Scrub: Demonstrates knowledge and competency in technical and clinical skills. Establishes and maintains the integrity, safety, and efficiency of the sterile field throughout the surgical procedure. Plans for and responds to the needs of the surgeon and other team members by constantly watching the sterile field.
  • Checks case carts supplies/instruments and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Ensures their availability and proper working order prior to each assigned case.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competency of supply inventory, utilization, and cost-effective practices.
  • Assists in the maintenance of supply inventory by communicating, well in advance, low PAR stock levels to the appropriate specialty leader and/or OR/Materials Coordinator.

Minimum Requirements
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing
  • Minimum 2 years experience in an acute care facility required, OR Level 1 Trauma experience preferred
  • Circulating and scrub experience in all specialties preferred
  • CNOR desirable
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Illinois
  • Current CPR, ACLS, PALS
