The Michael E. DeBakey VA Health Care System is seeking an outstanding nurse practitioner to join our Primary Care and Community Clinics Care team. He/she will provide comprehensive primary care and preventative care to primary care patients, under the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model. The type of care is served to the Veteran population with diseases consistent to those seen in the general population include, but are not limited to: acute and chronic illness, women's health, gender specific health care, mental health, mental health, and preventive care, along with coordination of care delivery. A major focus is in preventative medicine.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

* Assess the needs and plan intervention for individuals/families;

* Facility the delivery of primary, acute and chronic health care;

* Assists individuals/families to achieve optimal levels of health through collaboration with medical and health care professionals;

* Exercises medical decision-making and provides a broad range of

* diagnostic and therapeutic services for a specific group of patients;

* Exhibits leadership in initiating changes in patient care programs based on current concepts and findings from research and/or studies;

* Involved in direct patient care, patient and family teaching, staff education and multidisciplinary consultations and collaborations.

* Consistently demonstrates expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill multi-symptomatic patients;

* Maintains recognized Physician Assistant Standards of Practice and follows approved scope of practices;

* Serves as a resource person for standards development in health care in the area of quality improvement concerns;

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00a.m.- 4:30p.m

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
    • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a nurse practitioner in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
    • maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.]
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level III - Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a major as a NP practitioner

    Full and current board certification as a NP practitioner from a VA-approved certifying body. Certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.

    No NP experience required

  • Nurse II - Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a major as a NP practitioner; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.Full and current board certification as a NP practitioner from a VA-approved certifying body. Certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected. 2-3 years NP experience required
  • Nurse III - Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a major as a NP practitioner; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

    Full and current board certification as a NP practitioner from a VA-approved certifying body. Certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.

    > 3 years experience required

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: Registered Nurse Functional Requirements: Heavy Lifting 50 lbs and over (intermittently); Carrying up to 45 lbs (intermittently); Repeated bending; Straight Pulling up to 45 lbs (intermittently); Straight Pushing up to 45 lbs (intermittently); Stooping (intermittently); Squatting (intermittently); Kneeling (occasionally); Use of both arms; Use of both hands; Use of fingers; Overhead work, both arms (intermittently); Prolonged walking (up to 4 hours/day); Prolonged standing (up to 4 hours/day); Sitting (up to 2 hours/day); Far Vision - correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; Near Vision - correctable to read newsprint at 13-16 inches; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing - ability to hear and understand the spoken voice from a distance of 8 feet. Ability to effectively utilize a stethoscope and distinguish breath and heart, and bowel sounds; Emotional and mental stability ?,- ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the position and respond appropriately in emergency situations.
