The James J. Peters VA Medical Center, Bronx VAMC affiliated with the Mt. Sinai School of Medicine (NYC), numerous Nursing Academic Affiliations and the Hospital for Special Surgery, is located in the NW Bronx on a self contained campus easily accessible by car (free parking for eligible employees) and public transportation.
This position functions as a Wound Care Specialist. The professional nurse utilizes knowledge of nursing practice to provide care to veterans with skin and wound care problems. The wound care nurse provides consultation and care to in-patients and ambulatory care patients with wounds, including but not limited to pressure injuries, surgical wounds, ostomies, and other skin conditions, as well as patients receiving enteral and parenteral therapy (TPN and PPN). Additionally, this individual will assess wounds/pressure ulcers/injuries; work with staff to design a treatment plans; apply wound dressing with staff to ensure competency; and teach wound care on an ongoing basis through professional education, rounds, and training. Responsibilities include patient assessment, management of the utilization of high cost wound care supplies and equipment, e.g. specialty beds and wound vacuum therapy devices; teaching patients, their families, and staff how to manage stoma care and wound care; identifying patients who potential are at risk for skin injury; and providing appropriate care, referrals and support. Experience managing, reporting, and presenting data is required. Expertise in building positive collaborative relationships in an interprofessional environment is essential.
- MSN preferred
- Board Certification as a Wound Care Specialist/Enterostomal Nurse Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (WOCN) required (e.g. CWOCN, WCC with Ostomy Certification) or a wound care provider credential (e.g. IIWCC) preferred
- Preferred Medical and Surgical clinical nursing experience: 2-5 years
- Preferred Wound and Ostomy Care experience: 2 year minimum
- Tour of Duty: Monday to Friday, 8:00am – 4:30 pm
Grade and Salary will be determined by the Professional Nursing Standards Board
