The Registered Nurse (RN) assigned to Critical Care Unit within Medical Care Line will adhere to established policies, standards of care and standards of practice at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC). The RN will demonstrate leadership when providing nursing care and serve as a role model when assigned as team leader or charge nurse under the supervision of the Nurse Manager or designee. The Registered Nurse responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Apply the nursing process to systems or processes at the unit/team/work group level to improve care.

* Develop the initial nursing plan and updates the plan, serving as a resource person to less experienced staff, and acts as a leader in developing standards of care.

* Provide patient/family/significant other/health care provider with established realistic, measurable goals related to health education and treatment plane and in planning care on a continuum.

* Document and rate administrative and clinical information in a thorough and accurate manner.

* Demonstrate accountability in communicating information to patients in compliance with established standards and protocols.

Tour of Duty: 12 hour shifts; 7:30pm -8:00am shift. Tour may include rotation on weekends and holidays; may also include rotation to other tours of duty.

Relocation expenses and/or incentives are not authorized.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Functional Statement: Medical / Surgical Direct Care Staff Nurse

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Registration - Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements can be met as follows:

(1) Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR

(2) In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

Preferred Experience:

  • 5 to 7 years of recent critical care experience preferred; CCU experience preferred.
  • 2 to 4 years of recent charge nurse experience in an ICU setting preferred
  • BLS/ACLS Required
  • Current CCRN certification preferred.
  • BSN Preferred

Education/Experience for Grade Level Determination:

* Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.

* Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

* Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

* Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

* Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical requirements of this position include heavy lifting heavy lifting, 50 pounds heavy carrying, 50 pounds straight pulling (1-2 hours); pushing (1-2 hours); walking (2-4 hours); standing (2-6 hours); use of fingers; both hands required; ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable; far vision correctable; depth perception; Hearing (aid permitted).
