On March, 25, 2017, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago became the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. More than just a change of address, this shift will enable our continued mission to be the global source of science-driven breakthroughs in Human Ability. The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is Advancing Human Ability™ through the innovation and application of new and more promising treatments that eliminate the effects of injury, disease and the debilitating health conditions. People from around the globe choose us because of our expertise in treating a range of conditions, from the most complex conditions including cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, stroke and traumatic brain injury, to the more common, such as arthritis, chronic pain and sports injuries

We are currently seeking experienced Registered Nurses for the Medically Advanced Care Unit (MACU).

With the opening of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, the new hospital is pioneering an 8 bed inpatient rehabilitation unit where we will provide more intense medical management and telemetry as a means of monitoring and managing acutely ill patients.  In order to lessen the impact of an acute deterioration on our rehabilitation efforts, patients who meet criteria for care in this unit will have care transferred to a hospitalist team while continuing to participate in therapy.  The unit has higher nursing care hours and is staffed with nurses who can manage medical telemetry. The hospitalist team will round on a daily basis on these patients managing their acute medical needs while the physiatrist will manage their rehabilitation needs.  With this system in place, we hope to lessen the nurses’ burden of care of acutely ill patients on the traditional rehabilitation units, improve the timeliness of interventions for these acutely deteriorating inpatients, and reduce our leave of absence rates in order to keep patients on the path to recovery.

  • Current Illinois license to practice as a registered nurse and CPR certification required.
  • A minimum of one year med-surgical experience (required) OR one year telemetry or critical care experience in an acute care setting (preferred).
