Basic Requirements:

Nurse Practitioner
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • National Certification as a Nurse Practitioner
  • Master's degree from an NLN or CCNE accredited Nurse Practitioner program
  • Current, full, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse
  • State approval to practice as an NP
Physician Assistant
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education. [Graduate of a training program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of PA (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations. Additionally, candidates must meet one of the following:
    (1) Master's degree in any discipline;
    (2) Bachelor's degree in any discipline with one year of experience as a PA.]
  • Certification. [Must have successfully passed the PA National Certifying Exam (PANCE).
  • Licensure. PAs must possess an active, current, full, and unrestricted license to practice in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. PAs must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active and current licensure in that State.
  • English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. ยง 7403(f).

Preferred Experience:
  • Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health
  • At least 3 years of experience working with mental health patients/clients, specifically with SMI/SPMI.
  • At least 2 years of experience working "in -home/in-community" (MHICM and/or ACTT) with patients/clients.
  • At least 2 years of experience providing injections, preparing med-boxes, working with pharmacy to arrange medication pick up.
  • Experience and capability to collaboratively work with RN, SWs, MD/DO
  • At least 2 years of experience providing supportive therapy and case management to patients/clients, specifically with SMI/SPMI.
  • Experience working as an independent prescriber without direct supervision for at least 1 year (or with direct supervision for at least 2 years).
  • At least 2 years of experience working in community crisis intervention that also includes referral to higher levels of care.

Physical Requirements: : In accordance with VA Handbook 5019, Part II, Paragraph 3, II-1, 1(a), A pre-placement physical examination to determine the physical, cognitive, and emotional fitness of candidates for appointment in VA is required, and shall be completed prior to appointment, for all full-time individuals appointed under 38 U.S.C., Chapter 73, for Title 38 positions.
