They examine cells from a variety of sources, including body fluids, tissues, and organs, to identify abnormalities or diseases, such as cancer, infections, or inflammatory conditions. Cytotechnologists use their knowledge of cellular morphology, anatomy, and physiology to analyze cells and make accurate diagnoses. They work closely with pathologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure that patients receive appropriate treatment. Cytotechnologists must have excellent analytical and observational skills, as well as attention to detail and a strong understanding of laboratory techniques and equipment.
Requirements
- Certification or licensure is required to work as a cytotechnologist. This involves passing an examination, such as the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC) certification exam, to demonstrate knowledge and competency in the field.
