Job Summary

Qualifications:

A solid understanding of pre and post procedure needs of patients. Must have a “can-do” attitude, show initiative and willingness to adapt to change; be able to handle stressful situations. The Sedation RN provides direct patient care in accordance with established policies, procedures and protocols of National Vascular Associates.

Educational Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school

  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Virginia

  • Five (5) years nursing experience

  • BLS and ACLS certification

Basic Function and Responsibility

  • Creating an environment that leads to a positive patient care experience by evaluating, planning and implementing effective plans of care and communicating with both patients and their families.

  • Making sound decisions in response to changes in condition/response to treatment while maintaining a calm demeanor.

  • Utilizing the Electronic Health Record to document patient care.

  • Effectively coordinating with physicians and team members regarding changes in patient status, symptomatology, results of diagnostic tests and critical test values.

  • Responsible for providing individualized, age-appropriate, safe and quality patient care during pre-procedure, intra-procedure and post-procedure phases.

  • Accountable for daily clinical operations

  • Care for preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative patients, well versed in assessment, pain management, sedation and related complications.

  • Administers sedation and analgesia, monitors patient as appropriate

  • Handles regulatory compliance, policies and procedures, unit efficiencies and quality improvement

  • Maintains nursing operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures

  • Completes patient care requirements by scheduling and assigning nursing and staff, following up on work results

  • Provides information to patients and health care team by answering questions and requests.

  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing procedures, rules, and regulations.

  • Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by monitoring confidential information processing

  • Maintains documentation of patient care services by auditing patient and clinic records

  • Maintains nursing supplies inventory by studying usage reports; identifying trends, anticipating needed supplies.

  • Maintains a cooperative relationship among the health care team by communicating information, responding to requests and building rapport.

General Guidelines for all Clinical and Administrative Personnel

  • Must familiarize self and adhere to, AAAASF Guidelines, and internal policies for delivery of care

  • Leads by example

  • Ensure that the patient and family are involved in all care and fosters patient/family autonomy; assesses if patient expectations are being met.

  • Ensure that proper procedures are followed for reporting patient and staff injuries (e.g., fall, eye splash, needle stick)

Infection Control

  • Must refer to and implement all aspects of the Infection Control Policy as applicable.

Team Work

  • Possess ability to communicate and use effective interpersonal skills with colleagues and other members of the team

  • Fosters a positive work environment/attitude and encourages team work

  • Must be able to adhere to and practice consistent with patient and staff rights and responsibilities

  • Must provide customer satisfaction oriented environment for both patients, families, and other customers

  • Must possess strong time management skills

  • Must practice within basic scope of practice for their position

  • Must be able to ensure a safe environment for patients/families/ staff, identifying health & safety risks & take appropriate and immediate steps to alleviate the risk

  • Assist in the orientation of new personnel as assigned by appropriate staff member

Demonstration of knowledge and understanding of:

  • Patient Advocacy

  • Maintaining patient confidentiality and security

  • Attends annual BCLS courses, OSHA training, HIPAA training and all other required in-services

  • Attends and participates in all meetings as applicable or required.

  • Integration and coordination of care across settings and among disciplines

Safety and Emergency Preparedness

Describes safety plan and knows location of evacuation meeting place, describes staff as well as personal role; understands the HAZCOM program and use/location of SDS books. Able to recognize and respond to potential emergency situations.
