In the U.S., casual contact and bites from animals cause millions of human infections every year. Animals can also spread parasites that cause birth defects and visual impairment, transmit bacteria that cause severe gastrointestinal illness, and introduce new and deadly respiratory infections. This module provides nurses and emergency services professionals with information on old and new diseases transmitted by animals, how to identify them, and how to prevent them.

Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this educational program is to provide nurses and emergency services professionals in acute care, urgent care, and prehospital emergency care settings with information on illnesses transmitted by animals. After taking this course, you should be able to:

Describe the lifecycle of Toxoplasma gondii and Toxocara canis.
Explain the modes of transmission for the zoonoses Bartonella henselae, T. gondii, T. canis, Pasteurella multocida, Chlamydophila psittaci, Salmonella, and rabies.
Discuss measures to prevent infections transmitted by companion animals.
Discuss measures to prevent the spread of zoonotic respiratory coronaviruses.
