Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this interprofessional continuing education module is to provide an overview of the roles and interactions among a nurse, dietitian, speech-language pathologist, and occupational therapist as they address the complex needs of a young child who has experienced a near-drowning accident. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe the distinct and interactive roles of nurses, speech-language pathologists, dietitians, and occupational therapists who work in concert to address the post-acute needs of a pediatric patient with health problems related to acquired brain injury
  • Articulate typical assessment and intervention approaches used with a 3-year-old who is recovering from a non-fatal drowning
  • Explain how the roles and functions of an interdisciplinary healthcare team complement one another, requiring IP communication and coordination of services
