Goals and Learning Outcomes

This course will cover how COVID-19 can change a patients skin, hematological factors, and debilitate a patient to put them in the perfect scenario for pressure injury development. The important elements which are often overlooked, such as risk scores which drive interventions for prevention and diagnosis of pressure injuries are discussed. The concepts behind the development of pressure injuries in the patient with COVID-19, including immobility/debility, decreased oxygenation at a cellular level, and the release of cytokines leading to tissue destruction are also reviewed.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Explain three ways how COVID-19 can place a patient at risk for the development of pressure injuries.
  • Relate how deoxygenation can cause tissue destruction.
  • Summarize how appropriate risk-assessment scores can drive interventions for the prevention of PIs in the patient with COVID-19.
  • List two early interventions in the patient with COVID-19 for the prevention of PIs.
