Goals and Learning Outcomes

The creation of an abdominal stoma is a common procedure performed by surgeons as part of the treatment for both benign and malignant conditions. However, the construction of an intestinal stoma can be associated with multiple complications and should not be considered a trivial undertaking. The medical team caring for these patients should be cognizant of these complications before, during, and after stoma creation. In this review, the author will highlight some of the more commonly seen ostomy problems and discuss management and prevention strategies. This educational activity is supported by Convatec.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Explain the challenges of ostomy care and obesity
  • Identify the most appropriate pouching techniques for a patient with a peristomal hernia
  • Name at least three peristomal skin complications
