Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes

Visitation policies have existed since hospitals were founded and have changed throughout the years. As healthcare has become more technical and complex, the role of family members at the bedside has also changed. Visitors can provide measurable support for patients. At the same time, some visitors can complicate medical care by making it difficult to ensure safe and successful interventions. Effective and clear communication between the healthcare team and the visitors will provide a functional balance between these competing needs.

The goal of this course is to provide an overview of the healthcare provider’s role in forming care partnerships with a patient’s visitor during the hospital stay. This course will use review questions, story-based learning, and reflective thinking to promote active learning.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Recall the benefits of visitation, current regulatory standards related to hospital visitation, and how COVID-19 has impacted visitation policies.
