Osteoporosis is a silent disease. Most people do not know they have it until they experience a fracture. It is a significant cause of disability for older adults resulting in pain, deformity, and fractures and leading to increased mortality. Understanding who is at risk for osteoporosis, the common symptoms, and treatments helps you positively affect the outcomes of the people in your care. This course discusses the types of osteoporosis, risk factors, and treatments. The goal of this course is to educate nurses on risk factors and treatments for osteoporosis.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe primary and secondary osteoporosis.
  • Identify at least three risk factors for osteoporosis.
  • Discuss pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments for osteoporosis.
