Goals and Learning Outcomes

Many classes of drugs are used to treat hypertension (HTN). Several guidelines cover what type of drug to use depending on the severity of HTN, comorbidities, and the population affected. Members of the healthcare team should be aware of the antihypertensive medications used to reduce morbidity, prevent complications, and reduce end organ failure.

The goal of this course is to assist the healthcare team in keeping up to date with first- and second-line antihypertension medications, including those used in combination for antihypertensive emergencies.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Discuss the goals of hypertension management and the benefits of fixed-dose combination antihypertensives.
  • Explain the indications and mechanism of action for angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers, direct-acting vasodilators, direct-renin inhibitors, and medications used for hypertensive crisis.
  • Identify adverse effects and dosing titrations of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, calcium channel blockers, direct-acting vasodilators, direct-renin inhibitors, and medications used for hypertensive crisis.
