Goals and Learning Outcomes

Zika is a mosquito-borne viral infection and is the most recent arbovirus. The virus poses a significant health threat worldwide. The virus is neurotropic and in the same class as the dengue and West Nile viruses. It has been identified as the cause of congenital Zika syndrome, which leads to microcephaly and other congenital abnormalities in the fetus. The virus can trigger Guillain-Barré syndrome and other neurological diseases in adults. This course will improve awareness of the Zika virus for healthcare professionals. The course will also review the treatment, prevention, and handling of the Zika virus.


After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Recognize how the interprofessional team can collaborate to promote improved outcomes and prevent Zika virus infection.
  • Identify the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for pregnant women and testing for the Zika virus.
  • Identify the signs and symptoms of Zika virus infection.
  • List the prevention measures for mosquito-borne illness.
