Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this continuing education program is to provide nurses, social workers, and psychologists with information about parent and child factors commonly seen in families who use physical discipline and to present evidence regarding effects of corporal punishment on children. Information about alternative discipline strategies will also be provided. Additionally, descriptions of resources for caregivers will be presented to ensure professionals are equipped when initiating discussions with patients and families. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Discuss spanking and physical punishment of children
  • State outcomes associated with physical punishment
  • Present resources for alternative disciplinary strategies
