Overview
The goal of this course is to further educate pre-hospital EMS personnel and nurses about seizure management.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Epilepsy, also known as a seizure disorder, affects over 50 million people globally and 3 million people in the U.S. Over 150,000 new cases are diagnosed every year (Mass General Brigham Mass General for Children [MGBC], 2022). Seizure disorders are a heterogeneous group of disorders that have a common thread of abnormal nerve cell (neuronal) activity that misfire, producing seizures. The course will provide both prehospital emergency medical service (EMS) as well as hospital and outpatient (community) nursing professionals with a high-level overview of seizure disorder knowledge and management.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Review seizure causes, triggers, pathophysiology, complications, symptoms, and diagnosis.
  • Recall seizure classifications, pharmaceutical, and other management of seizures.
  • Identify how seizures are managed on scene via EMS with pre-hospital care to nursing care in the hospital and in the community.
