Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this course is to provide nurses in acute care settings with information about severe mental illness and its treatment.
 
After taking this course, you should be able to:
  • Discuss the public health and social impact of severe and persistent mental illness.
  • Describe positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia and treatment guidelines.
  • Identify symptoms, treatments, and comorbidity concerns of major depressive disorders.
  • Explain diagnostic categories and biochemical considerations of bipolar illness.
  • Describe anxiety disorders and treatments.
  • Discuss how nurses can influence policy and improve access to mental healthcare.
