Overview
The goal of this course is to educate nurses in the acute care setting on protecting older adults during disasters.Goals and Learning Outcomes
Major disasters affect everyone, but the older adult population is particularly vulnerable to their devastating effects. In 2005, of the people who died in Louisiana due to Hurricane Katrina, 50% were older than 74 (CNN, 2022). Those who survived experienced stressful and sometimes inappropriate displacement, which contributed to a significant decline in their health and functioning. This course will inform nurses on strategies to protect the health and lives of older adults before, during, and after a disaster.
- Recall factors that increase the impact of disasters on older adults.
- Identify acute and chronic health problems experienced by older adults during and after a disaster.
- Identify strategies for preparing and treating older adults before, during, and after a disaster.
