Goals and Learning Outcomes

Year after year, Gallup polls reveal that the public has a high level of trust in nurses (Saad, 2022). Even the World Health Organization marked 2020 as the Year of the Nurse (The World Health Organization, 2022). Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic nurses have been thrown into the spotlight to demonstrate to the public the dangers of COVID-19. While this has been a win in one way it has also been a curse. The public is finally starting to see the demanding work nurses do every day and starting to understand the value of nurses. On the other hand, all the media attention has also brought to light the challenging and overwhelming work conditions nurses endure. This negative perception of nursing can have long-term consequences for the nursing profession by preventing bright and talented people from pursuing a career in nursing.

It is up to nurses to promote a positive image of the nursing profession. This module provides an overview of nursing, its image, and how nurses can enhance the public’s perception of nursing by acting individually and as a profession.

The goal of this course is to equip nurses with knowledge and tactics to improve the image of the nursing profession by acting individually and as a group.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify five actions nurses can take individually to improve the image of nursing.
  • Name at least three ways to promote a positive nursing image in your workplace and to the public.
