Overview
The goal of this course is to educate healthcare professionals about non-opioid analgesics to aid in an interdisciplinary approach to pain management.
Goals and Outcomes
Goals and Learning Outcomes
Pain is universal. It is a subjective experience that can be either acute or chronic. An estimated 1 in every 5 American adults is affected by chronic pain on a daily basis, leading to hundreds of billions of dollars of lost productivity and tens of billions in drug costs (Yong et al., 2022). The focus of this course is on the role of non-opioid analgesics commonly used to treat pain, primarily acetaminophen (APAP) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), and will offer a comprehensive look at general, non-cancer pain management.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify the role of non-opioids used with or without opioids in treating multimodal pain therapy.
  • Distinguish the pharmacology, indications, contraindications, and common adverse effects of non-opioid analgesics.
  • Discuss the risks, benefits, and education from the use of non-opioid analgesics.
