Goals and Learning Outcomes

Knowledge gaps about current clinical guidelines for secretion management persist despite evidence that use of standardized guidelines decrease adverse effects of endotracheal suctioning. The continued use of traditional methods, such as deep suctioning for long durations, routine instillation of normal saline with suctioning, or manual chest physiotherapy for all patients with respiratory compromise, continues despite evidence that these practices pose potential harm. Clinical practice in suctioning, normal saline instillation, and chest physiotherapies must be based on current evidence to provide safer and more efficient care of the pediatric patient. This course reviews three key areas of secretion management based on the available evidence including suction techniques, the use of normal saline, and manual chest physiotherapies.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Identify clinical indications, risks, clinical practice guidelines, and evidence-based practice for suctioning in pediatric patients.
  • Identify clinical indications, risks, clinical practice guidelines, and evidence-based practice for the use of normal saline in pediatric patients.
  • Identify clinical indications, risks, clinical practice guidelines, and evidence-based practice for manual chest physiotherapies in pediatric patients.
