Goals and Learning Outcomes

Osteoporosis, the most common metabolic bone disorder, is characterized by compromised bone mass and strength that predisposes affected people to an increased risk for fractures. The disease occurs when the rate of bone loss (resorption) is greater than the rate of bone formation. This results in decreased bone mass as the disease progresses, which causes the bones to become fragile. Fragile bones are more prone to fracture, even from normal activities such as lifting and bending. The goal of this course is to educate nurses and physical therapists in the acute setting on the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  • Describe osteoporosis and identify people at risk
  • List four current treatment modalities for osteoporosis
  • Relate four appropriate nursing strategies aimed at prevention
  • Describe osteoporosis characteristics, risk factors, and diagnosis.
  • Discuss current prevention or treatment modalities for osteoporosis and related fractures.
