Goal and Learning Outcomes

The goal of this bioethics continuing education program is to inform nurses about the history of bioethics in the United States, including the affect of bioethics on the evolution of nursing concepts, such as independent nursing judgment and nursing advocacy for patients’ rights. After studying the information presented here, you will be able to:
  • Describe changes in medical decision making since 1940
  • Critique human subjects research in the U.S. during World War II
  • Name two events that drew bioethics into medical decision making
  • Name the legislation that resulted from the Nancy Cruzan decision
