    1. The goal of this module is to explore the causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD), the incidence and prevalence, staging classifications, screening, assessment requirements, complications and symptom and medication management. Upon completion of this module, the nurse will be able to:
      Identify 4 causes of chronic kidney disease (CKD)
      Describe 5 symptoms associated with CKD
      Outline 2 screening methods for CKD
      List 3 complications of CKD
      Analyze collaborative management approaches to the patient with relevant data needed to make decisions with the patient/family
      Discuss the role of the interdisciplinary team in modality education

  • Hemodialysis

    1. The goal of this module is to provide the nurse with an overview of the care provided to End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis. Upon completion of this module, the nurse will be able to:
      Describe the medical complications associated with the hemodialysis treatment and care of the vascular access
      Discuss how the hemodialysis treatment works to correct the deficit of the kidneys in ESRD patients
      Define the interventions, including medications, to improve and maintain patient health
      Compare and contrast the roles of the different interdisciplinary team members in caring for the patient
      Explore teaching and educational needs for patients undergoing hemodialysis
      Examine the technical components of the therapy and associate these with potential complications

  • Peritoneal Dialysis

    1. The goal of this module is to provide the nurse with an overview of the care provided to ESRD patients undergoing the peritoneal dialysis procedure. Upon completion of this module, the nurse will be able to:
      Describe the principles of peritoneal dialysis
      Identify suitable candidates for peritoneal dialysis
      Relate the anatomy & physiology to peritoneal access placement
      Examine the mechanisms that contribute to water and solute clearance in peritoneal dialysis and how they are measured
      List 3 medical complications of peritoneal dialysis
      Interpret effective components of an effective patient training program
      Explain the important components of a program to support ongoing patient needs

  • Renal Transplantation

    1. The goal of this module is to provide the nurse with insight into transplantation as a method of renal replacement therapy and the subsequent care of the patient. Upon completion of this module, the nurse will be able to:
      Identify 2 sources of donors for kidney transplantation
      Recognize 3 strategies to increase the number of available organ donors
      Describe post-operative care of the transplant patient
      Summarize complications that may occur in the early or late stages of patient management
      Differentiate transplant medications used to prevent episodes of rejection
      Discuss the ethical debate surrounding organ donation
